STEM – Round #2

STEM is one of the most important subjects for me to learn. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineer, and Math. For the second round of STEM, we still focused on Science.

This round, we learned about Chemical Bonding! In that lesson, I got to study Ionic Bonding, Ionic Compound, Covalent Bonding, Hydrogen bond, Polar Bond, Polar Compound and covalent compound! We also did some cool experiment to see what happened. CK12 is a very helpful website that my classmates and I used to study and it was recommended by our teacher, Chanda.

I can’t wait to learn more enthusiastic lessons and do some more cool experiment! Thanks for reading and visiting my portfolio.

English Literacy – Round 2

English literacy is one of the essentials that I enjoyed and felt enthusiastic this second round. Every round for English literacy, we always have different themes. The theme for this round is about social and environmental injustice. For the first week of this essential, we discussed the African American community in Connecticut that was discriminated by many people and most of them lived in poverty, and they lived in the place that was affected by air pollution. After the discussion, we were researched about different countries and waste management in the country. That time, I was selected to research about Kenya. What I research was about the country’s relationship with trash, waste management, the government action and the affection of people that live near the dumpsites. Then, we all shared and I got to know many more country about their waste management. The next week came, and it was Halloween week!

We researched the history and facts about Halloween and did some fun activities, too. Then, I learned something very interesting. It was about argumentative. My teammates and I were discussed about philosophical chairs. Philosophical Chairs is similar to debate but we can change from agreeing to disagree and it had to be very respectful. The statement was “Schools should stop the practice of giving letter grades to students. Instead, they should only give written feedback.” I was on the agree side and it was really enthusiastic. Talking about that, we were learning about devil’s advocate. Basically, devil’s advocate is a person who expresses a contentious opinion in order to provoke debate or test the strength of the opposing argument. I picked a few statements and brainstormed questions that the devil’s advocate might ask. We were also planning our essay for our thesis statement. My statement was “Single used plastic should be eliminated because it’s very harmful and effective, especially to marine lives, lives on Earth, our planet and people should use other things rather than single used plastic.” Then I started to learn how to choose evidence for our essay. I got to learn about primary, secondary and tertiary Sources. After that, I learned how to evaluate sources by using OPVL strategy. OPVL stands for origin, purpose, value, and limitation.

    • Origin: Where did this source come from? (website, book?) Is this a primary source or a secondary source? Who is the author? When was it created?
    • Purpose: Why does this source exist? What is the authors’ goal by publishing this? Who is the target audience? (is it for university students, teachers, scientists?) Why did the author choose this format? (why use a video, website, poem etc) What is the source supposed to do? (persuade the reader, provide general knowledge)

  • Value: Why is this source valuable? (what makes this source useful?) How relevant is this source? (example: first-hand account, analysis of..)

  • Limitation: What are the limitations or problems with this source? (example: the limited perspective on a topic, doesn’t show long-term consequences) Is it biased? Does the source provide a limited perspective? (opinion pieces vs factual articles)

Those are the meaning of OPVL. Then, I started to begin my body paragraph. The second round was ended and the argumentative essay will be finished at the beginning of round 3. I promise that the third round post will be published before 2019.

Argumentative Essays that I was working on.

Thank you for reading!

Multimedia & Technology – Round 2

Multimedia & Technology

In the past several weeks, in multimedia and technology essential, I got to learn many new interesting things and I was very enjoyed.

The first topic that I learned was about digital storytelling. Digital storytelling is just to tell or describe stories in many digital ways. It can be animation videos, documentary, news articles, pictures, audio that tell the story. What makes a good story is Pixar story structure. Here is the link that has the best explain what Pixar story structure is (Credit: Bloop Animation). At the bottom of this article is an example of a Pixar story structure that I made.

Dream Always Comes True

Once upon a time, there was a beginner YouTuber named Pisal. Every day, he always brings his small camera with him to do some vlog for his YouTube channel. One day, he met his favorite YouTuber that had 5 billion fans named Rayuth and then, Pisal got a big shoutout in his idol’s video. Because of that, Pisal became more and more famous on social media. Because of that, he became wealthy and became one of the most famous YouTubers in the world and he wanted to get 1 billion fans but he still used his old small camera. Because of that, Pisal wanted to buy a new $1 million camera, and he thought, “Well, eeny mini miny moe, that is what I want to do”. Because of that, he went to the camera store and bought a camera with diamonds surrounding it. Because of that, Pisal was so happy and his video just got so many more views and more popular. Until Finally, he got his 1 billion subscribers and his dream came true!

The next lesson was about some composition tips to take better photos and those are Straight Horizon, Rule of Thirds, head room, Lead Room, Symmetry, Depth, Frames and Leading Lines. I also took some photos but sadly, it got lost. So, the pictures below are what my friends took.

Frames

The next lesson was also about photography yet it was mainly about exposure. What is exposure? Exposure is the amount of light that reaches the camera sensor and it determines how light or dark the photo will be. There are three things that affect exposure. They are shutter speed, aperture, and iso. Shutter speed is the length of time the shutter opens to allow light in. It measures in fractions of a second; example: 1/20, 1/100, etc. If you double the shutter speed, the amount of light comes in also double. It also affects how motion is captured. Aperture is the size of the opening in the lens through which light enters the camera and it measures in f-stop values; example: f/1.8, f/11, etc. For ios, it’s about how sensitive your camera is to light.

After that, we learned about different types of camera shot. They are, long shot, full shot, medium shot, close up, extreme close up, high and low angle, eye level, tilt, over the shoulder and bird’s eye view. Pictures below are what my teammates and I took.

Close Up
Extreme Close Up
Medium Shot
Full Shot
High Angle
Long Shot
Low Angle
Over the Shoulder
Tilt

The last lesson was about videography. I got to know how to use a shotgun microphone, lavalier microphone, tripod, type of shots (B roll, A roll) and how to take a good video.

After a wonderful round of multimedia essential, I got so many new knowledge in my brain and I can’t wait to learn the next lesson! Thank you for visiting my portfolio! Have a beautiful day!

Khmer Literature – Round 2

In the past several weeks of Khmer literature essential, I got to learn many new special lessons that made me feel very enthusiastic and enjoyable.
My classmates and I were preparing to make a Khmer poem book that made by Liger Leadership Academy students. I hope it will go well and I will let you know when it publishes.
Our facilitator, Sokha was facilitated us on how to read in a real way, how to put your emotion in when reading, read like you’re acting. That time, I was one of the characters in a famous Khmer fiction story. The story was called “កុលាបប៉ៃលិន” which means “Pailin Rose”. Pailin is a small province in Cambodia that borders Battambang and Thailand. I would say, it was one of the most joyful lessons of the round.

កុលាបប៉ៃលិន, the story I read.

At that time, two Cambodia traditional festivals that are known as “Water Festival” and “Kathina” happened. So, teacher Sokha wanted us to get to know our traditional festival and celebration. We were divided into teams to research about those two festival/celebration.
After I learned those lessons, I felt like more and more enthusiastic knowledge got into my wonderful brain and I hope to learn more lessons next round! Thank you so much for reading and visiting my portfolio! Have a great day!

Math – Round 2

Math is one of my favorite subjects that I learn here at Liger. During the second round of math, I got to learn many new things.

First, I reviewed some fraction lessons that we learned last round (Math Last Round’s link).

After that, I got to learn a new lesson about geometry. In that lesson, I learned about perimeter and area of the square, triangle, and parallelogram.

Then, I got to learn another new lesson, ratio. In that lesson, I learned about “finding ratio, equivalent ratio and combining three quantities.

Beside Lessons in the book, I was assigned to do some fun coding about math algebra on a website called Code.org. Khan academy is also one of the websites that helped me a lot in the past several weeks of math.

One of the exercises I did in math class.

After I learned those lessons, I felt very enthusiastic in class and I can’t wait to learn more lessons in my wonderful class. Thank you so much for reading!

S.T.E.M – Round 1

STEM is a very important subject that we need to learn and have a bright future! STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineer & Math. For this first round of STEM, we focused on science.

So, what is science? Science is a study about the natural world based on logic and evidence. In this round of STEM, I learned about physical science, matters, atoms, ions, isotope, atomic force, quark, atomic mass, Celsius & Fahrenheit, physical properties, physical change and reaction, and chemical changes and reaction.

After a round of STEM, I learned so many new things and I hope I’ll get to learn more lessons next round. Thanks for visiting and reading my portfolio.

Multimedia & Technology – Round 1

Multimedia & Technology class had become one of my favorite essentials. In this class, I learned about research skills, some Adobe apps, and algorithm.
For researching skills, I got a lot more ideas on the basic skills to research. Example; you want to research the Great Wall of China. If you search The Great Wall, it will give you the movie, not the wall. So, to get what you want, you need to search “the Great Wall of China”. You need to search it will quotation marks and to make your search even better, and you don’t want the movie, you want the wall, so try to search The Great Wall -Movie, then it will show you the wall, not the movie because you put -movie, and it means that you don’t want to search about the Great Wall movie. These examples above are what I learn and there are many skills to research. The next lesson was about Adobe apps. That time, we started to learn only three apps first and those three are Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and InDesign. At that time, I got to teach my classmates about Adobe Lightroom and it went very well. After one week of learning those three Adobes, I made a poster in Indesign that included two photos I edit from Lightroom and Photoshop. Here is the poster I made, it’s the pdf file and I hope you will like it (Poster). I really enjoyed with those Adobe lessons and I hope I could learn more Adobe lessons. For algorithm lessons, I got to learn more about how to solve and get things done easier. The reason why it is in technology class is that algorithm is one of the basic needs in coding. Thanks for reading!

Khmer – Round 1

Khmer is my first language! I learn English but I will never forget Khmer. In this first term of Khmer, we learned how to interview people in a formal way, how to dress formally at the business conference in Khmer language and making Khmer poems.

After I learned, I gain so many knowledge and here are the links to my lessons that I’ve done in Khmer class. (Interview People), (Formal Dress).

The poem below is a Khmer poem that I made and if you don’t understand, it’s a poem about 24 provinces and a city in Cambodia. My friends’ poem and mine will be putting in a school poem book and it will be published soon. Thank you for reading!

English Literacy – Round 1

This is the first term of essentials in Liger Leadership Academy. English literacy is one of the most important essentials to participate in. In the literacy class, I’ve got to learn new and got more knowledge from my facilitator, Hannah and get to learn with the new class which is called the Lit Studio.

Everyday before the class, we always do the positive affirmation to make everyone feels comfortable and thinks optimistic in class. In this round, our big theme is about the history of English language. Every week, we’ve learned ten new words that we needed to know about the definitions, synonym, antonym and especially root words or where are those words come from? In the first week of the first round, we’ve learned about the pre English which it’s all about where did English come from. We also learned about the gods behind days of the week and what does it mean. For week two, we were learning about the old English which was from year 450 to year 1000. Beside that, we’ve learned about 10 new words that are related to eyes and ears. One of the most exciting moments was making teaching videos about those new words and shared it to my classmates. Then, we made it to week three which was the week that we studied about middle English. One day of that week was on the day we called “9/11” which was happened 17 years ago. We did some research about it and I thought it was an interesting thing to learn. Learning about special events in the past is related to memories. So, my classmates and I wrote a paragraph about our earliest memories and it made me feel very enthusiastic to write more about it. Let’s move on to the fourth week! During that brilliant week, we were on the way to the middle modern English which was very famous about William Shakespeare. Our facilitator made us read a article about Shakespeare and learned more about him. After that, everyone got a partner and our tasks were to research about anyone that is famous and read some biography about that person and my partner and I decided to choose Harriet Tubman. Then, we needed to plan and made a video about her biography and convince people to come to an exhibition that is mainly about her. Here is the link to my video (https://flipgrid.com/ac74b7) and I hope you will enjoy it. For week 5, we’ve learned about the modern English, which was from 1763 to 1989 which was the year that the second version of Oxford Dictionary published. Also, I wrote a cinquain poem about photography which is what I love to do in my free times. In addition to that, my facilitator introduced Mahatma Gandhi who was a perfect role model that took peace and independence back to India without any violence. October, 1st was the first day of the last week before Pjum Ben break. During that last week, we did an overall review about what I’ve learned and how well I did in the class.

Last but not least, this first round of English Literacy was one of the best classes I participated in. I gain a lot more knowledge and learned so many new words. Thank you ever so much for visiting and reading my portfolio.

Math – Round One

Math is one of the most important subjects that I need to learn and gain my knowledge and it’s really important for my future, too. In this first term of math, I’ve learned many lessons such as whole numbers, fraction and algebra. I was trying to make the best of my learning in this class and other classes.

In the whole numbers lesson, I learned about writing numbers in words and standard forms; adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, comparing numbers and estimating. For fraction lesson, I studied about proper and improper fractions, comparing fractions, mixed numbers, adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying Fractions. For algebra, we did some challenging algebra word problems but I did very well, too. Even though it was difficult, there are no right or wrong, it is our experience.

Seven weeks so far, I very enjoyed and I can’t wait to learn more lessons and do more exercises. Math is fun!
